<p>Nelson absolvierte die Leonard Davis Film School an der <a href="City_University_of_New_York" title="City University of New York">City University of New York</a>. Er begann sein Studium zuvor zunächst am <a href="Beloit_College" title="Beloit College">Beloit College</a>, wechselte mehrfach die Universität und kam schließlich nach New York. Nach seinem Studium arbeitete er für den Dokumentarfilmer William Greaves (1926–2014) im Bereich Schnitt. Außerdem war er einige Jahre für United Methodist Communication tätig.<sup id="cite_ref-bio2_1-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-bio2-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

</p><p>Er unterrichtete Filmproduktion an der <a href="Howard_University" title="Howard University">Howard University</a>. Nelson war Fellow des <a href="American_Film_Institute" title="American Film Institute">American Film Institute</a> und der New York Foundation for the Arts. Außerdem war er Revson Fellow an der <a href="Columbia_University" title="Columbia University">Columbia University</a>. Im Frühling 1997 wurde er zum University Regents Lecturer an der <a href="University_of_California" title="University of California">University of California</a> ernannt.<sup id="cite_ref-bio1_2-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-bio1-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> 2003 wurde ihm die <a href="MacArthur_Fellowship" title="MacArthur Fellowship">MacArthur Fellowship</a> zugesprochen.

</p><p>Nelson tritt seit Ende der 1980er Jahre als Regisseur und Produzent von Dokumentationen in Erscheinung, gelegentlich ist er auch als Drehbuchautor tätig. Seine erste eigene Produktion war <i>Two Dollars and a Dream</i>, über die erste schwarze Millionärin, er begann dann auch für <a href="Public_Broadcasting_Service" title="Public Broadcasting Service">Public Broadcasting Service</a> zu arbeiten.<sup id="cite_ref-bio2_1-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-bio2-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Er ist Gründer und Präsident der Half Nelson Productions, Inc, einer unabhängigen Produktionsfirma. Sein eigenes Schaffen umfasst rund 70 Produktionen. Seine Arbeiten werden auch im Fernsehen gezeigt.<sup id="cite_ref-bio1_2-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-bio1-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Sein Schaffen ist gekennzeichnet von einer breiten Themenvielfalt. Er portraitiert einzelne Personen, beschäftigt sich mit der Geschichte von sozialen Bewegungen und der schwarzen US-Amerikaner und Indianer, mit Bildung bis hin zu Arbeiten über Afrika und Musik. Auch einzelne Ereignisse wie das <a href="Jonestown-Massaker" title="Jonestown-Massaker">Jonestown-Massaker</a> werden von ihm filmisch aufgearbeitet. Mehrere seiner Filme wurden auch beim <a href="Sundance_Film_Festival" title="Sundance Film Festival">Sundance Film Festival</a> aufgeführt.

</p><p>Stanel ist Mitbegründer von Firelight Films, einer Non-Profit-Organisation, die auch Dokumentationen erstellt und zu ihrer Verbreitung beiträgt.

</p><p>Er war gemeinsam mit <a href="Traci_Curry" title="Traci Curry">Traci Curry</a> für <i><a href="Attica_(2021)" title="Attica (2021)">Attica</a></i>, über die <a href="Attica_Correctional_Facility" title="Attica Correctional Facility">Attica Correctional Facility</a>, bei der <a href="Oscarverleihung_2022" title="Oscarverleihung 2022">Oscarverleihung 2022</a> in der Kategorie <a href="Oscar/Bester_Dokumentarfilm" title="Oscar/Bester Dokumentarfilm">Bester Dokumentarfilm</a> nominiert. Im Jahr zuvor wurden die beiden bei den Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards nominiert. Die <a href="Directors_Guild_of_America" title="Directors Guild of America">Directors Guild of America</a> zeichnete sie für diese Arbeit aus, hinzu kam der The Ridenhour Documentary Film Prize bei den <a href="The_Ridenhour_Prizes" title="The Ridenhour Prizes">The Ridenhour Prizes</a>. Von der <a href="International_Documentary_Association" title="International Documentary Association">International Documentary Association</a> wurde er 2016 für sein Lebenswerk geehrt.

</p><p>In den Jahren 2003 und 2011 gewann Nelson je einen <a href="Emmy" title="Emmy">Emmy</a>. Zwei Mal erhielt er den News & Documentary Emmy Award, 2016 wurde er dort zudem für sein Schaffen ausgezeichnet. Ebenfalls 2016 wurde ihm ein <a href="Peabody_Award" title="Peabody Award">Peabody Award</a> verliehen. Er ist Träger der <a href="National_Humanities_Medal" title="National Humanities Medal">National Humanities Medal</a>. Für seinen Film über <a href="Miles_Davis" title="Miles Davis">Miles Davis</a> war er für den <a href="Grammy_Award_for_Best_Music_Film" title="Grammy Award for Best Music Film">Grammy Award for Best Music Film</a> nominiert.
